"Black is Beautiful" Theme for Early Childhood

Maureen Ingram’s early childhood PK3 class at Inspired Teaching Demonstration PCS launched the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action with activities around the theme “Black is Beautiful.” Each day, students will work together to create a black is beautiful mural. Students will also examine an illustration from the book Child of the Civil Rights Movement and share what they “see, think, wonder” about the picture.

Each day of the week Ms. Ingram will share a picture book by an African American author with her students related to the 13 Black Lives Matter Principles.

Monday - Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan [Unapologetically Black]

Tuesday - That is My Dream by Langston Hughes and Daniel Miyares [Restorative Justice] Preschoolers will respond to the prompt “Our world would be better if...”

Wednesday - The Sweet Smell of Roses by Angela Johnson [Black Village, Black Women] and a whole school read-aloud of I have the Right to be a Child by Alain Serres [Restorative Justice]

Thursday - Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson [Empathy]

Friday - My Story, My Dance: Robert Battle's Journey to Alvin Ailey by Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome [Collective Value, Queer Affirming]

Students added to their Black is Beautiful mural throughout the week and their work, along with the work of another PK3 class, were displayed in the hallway at school.
