Open Call: Let This World be Beautiful Alma Thomas Exhibit

An OPEN CALL EXHIBITION inspired by Alma Thomas Open to artists, performers, and designers teaching in a Washington, D.C. Public School (preK-12)

An exuberant colorist who abstracted shapes and patterns from trees and flowers, Alma Thomas is not only a renowned Black painter, but a Washingtonian who made a huge impact in her role as an art teacher. Inspired by her support of her students—and her relentless search for transformation and uplift—DC Public Library is excited to showcase the artistic talents of the next generation of Washington artist-educators.

For this open call exhibition, DC Public Library seeks artworks that take inspiration from Thomas’ deep engagement with the world around her—her dazzling rhythmic abstractions as well as her dedication to teaching. Applicants are invited to submit up to 4 works that relate in some way to Thomas' life and/or biography.

Work in all media are eligible and encouraged, including: two-dimensional, three-dimensional, musical compositions, performance documentation, and video. Artists are encouraged to make new work in response to this call.

Considerations:

-All two-dimensional work should be mounted, framed, or otherwise prepared for professional exhibition

-Wall mounted work should not exceed 36” by 48” and 50 lbs

-Time-based media works should be limited to 15 minutes

-Each of the submitted works must be available for exhibit if chosen by the jurors

- A modest honorarium for materials will be provided to selected artists.
